Senior
Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging focuses on assisting
seniors "to live with dignity and choices in their homes and
communities." Founded in 1973, the organization provides services to
citizens throughout the region, including Charles City, New Kent,
Henrico, Hanover, Goochland, Powhatan, Chesterfield and the City of
Richmond, and receives federal, state, local and private funding.
With
over 140,000 persons age 60 and older residing in the Greater Richmond
region, Senior Connections provides ways the growing senior sector can
remain active and independent, including:
Senior Employment and Volunteer Opportunities
In less than five years, workers age 45 and over will comprise 40
percent of the workforce. Senior Connections seeks to maximize
the impact of a mature workforce through job training and support for
those wants to update current skills and/or re-entering the
workforce. Senior Connections’ Retired and Senior Volunteer
Program (RSVP) provides volunteer opportunities for seniors to use
their skills and experiences to fulfill community needs.
Caregiver Support
Senior Connections offers support to individuals who are in caregiving
roles or anticipate they will be a caregiver in the future. In
addition to providing information about available services and
assisting individuals with accessing support services, Senior
Connections leads programs such as counseling and support groups,
training for caregivers, and helping with home modifications, assistive
technology, and emergency response systems.
Money Management
Senior Connections provides counseling to seniors regarding creating a
financial document filing system, preparing a budget, assisting with
timely bill-paying, balancing checkbooks, reviewing bank statements,
and helping educate and protect clients from fraud.
Insurance Counseling
The Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP),
accessed through Senior Connections, provides seniors with education
and counseling with their decisions pertaining to medical benefit
insurance plans, long-term care insurance, Medicare and Medicaid, and
medical bill payments.
Friendship Cafés
Senior Connections coordinates congregate meal sites offering
nutritious meals and opportunities for socialization, recreation,
exercise, health education, and screenings for older adults.
